Alopecia Areata and Cosmetic Health Conditions: Implications for VR and Quality of Life

This presentation will focus on the implications of living with cosmetic health conditions with a specific focus on alopecia areata. The presenter will discuss his experiences living with alopecia, this conditions impact on quality of life, and strategies for best supporting individuals who are living with similar types of health conditions.
Objective #1: Participants will be able to identify a variety of health conditions with cosmetic implications.
Objective #2: Participants will be able to describe the psychosocial impact of life with cosmetic health conditions.
Objective #3: Participants will be able to identify different strategies for supporting individuals who are living with cosmetic health conditions.
Garrett is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation and Human Services at Penn State Hazleton. Prior to his appointment at Penn State, Garrett served as a vocational specialist for individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness in a community mental health program located in Madison, WI. Garrett has been living with alopecia universalis for eight years and is actively engaged in research on improving quality of life outcomes for this group.
